The Open Championships

The 151st Open Golf Championships, Royal Liverpool. Hoylake.

The Open Golf Championships covers a seven-day period made up of 3 Practice and 4 Championship Days attracting an international crowd of upwards of 45k per event day. The 151st Open Golf Championship at Royal Liverpool was the most highly attended Championships outside of St Andrews, as a venue itself it is town based and has a paucity of public parking.

Due to a lack of parking, all public attendees were required to arrive to the site either via Park & Ride or rail travel, no easy feat during peak strike season.

Working closely with the multi-agency transport team, we developed a bespoke package to facilitate safe, efficient and mass movement of pedestrians from arrival points to admission whilst ensuring that the local roads and businesses were not adversely impacted.

Our challenges included balancing the park and ride sites capacity and flow, routing championship and VIP vehicles whist providing dynamic VAPP style check points.

To ensure that the joint operations were seamless we supported the R&A with a team of experienced personnel within the MACC to ensure that we were available for decision making and giving us full resilience to deal with emergencies throughout.

Our team included 3 specifically trained PATO motorcyclists on patrol to ensure that we could respond promptly to incidents and 41 experienced, fully trained, vetted and Merseyside accredited personnel to cover 25 points spanning a 35km2 area between the M53 and Royal Liverpool.
